Freedom Business Alliance strengthens survivor employment as a long-term solution to prevent re-exploitation and build durable freedom.

Freedom isn’t complete the moment someone is rescued. Freedom becomes durable when someone can rebuild a life, earn an income, and stand on stable ground without fear of being pulled back into exploitation. That’s why Freedom Place deeply values organizations that treat survivor employment as a frontline defense, not a secondary outcome. The Freedom Business Alliance (FBA) exists to solve one of the most practical, overlooked questions in the anti-trafficking fight: What happens next, and how do we keep it from happening again?

The Visionary Roots of Freedom Business Alliance

Launched in 2016, the FBA emerged from a two-year collaborative effort by a global coalition of 30 entrepreneurs, advocates, and strategists across nine countries. Central to this founding was Rachel Rose Nelson, whose leadership was instrumental in pioneering the "Business as Mission" (BAM) framework. Under her guidance, the alliance proved that a competitive business model could serve as a powerful vehicle for healing and long-term stability. To ensure these workplaces remain truly restorative, FBA integrates the expertise of survivor leaders into its core strategy, ensuring that ethical, trauma-informed practices are never sidelined by the bottom line.

The Workforce of Freedom

The heroes of FBA are the businesses themselves. These companies exist not as charity projects, but as real enterprises that create real careers.

Their work includes:

  • Global Freedom Business Network: Connecting and strengthening businesses that employ survivors and those at risk.

  • Trauma-Informed Workplace Tools: Resources, standards, and best practices that help prevent re-exploitation.

  • Examples of Restoration Through Work: Businesses ranging from artisan production to high-skill technology roles.

How Employment Prevents Human Trafficking

The Freedom Business Alliance (FBA) recognizes that a survivor without economic stability remains a prime target for re-exploitation. While rescue provides immediate safety, the "long game" of freedom requires a sustainable alternative to the financial desperation that traffickers exploit. FBA’s model works by scaling "Freedom Businesses"—entities specifically designed to provide survivors with more than just a paycheck. By integrating trauma-informed workplaces with professional skill-building, FBA transforms employment into a protective shield of dignity, routine, and upward mobility. This approach ensures that survivors aren't just surviving, but are building financially independent lives that are structurally resistant to the lures and threats of the illicit trade.
